African Union
Complete knowledge about African Union (AU) organization:
- The intention of the AU was to replace the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), established on 25 May 1963 in Addis Ababa by 32 signatory governments. The OAU was disbanded on 9 July 2002.
- The AU Charter was signed in Sirte Declaration, on 9 September 1999 in Libya. The bloc was founded on 26 May 2001 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The leaders of Organization of African Unity met in Lusaka on July 11,2001 and decided to
change its name from Organization of African Unity to African Union. So, officially it was
launched on 9 July 2002 in Durban, South Africa.
Addis Ababa and Johannesburg are its political centers.
